Abstract
The subject of this paper is the conservation treatment of a pair of c. 1865 red silk boots. The contents of this paper describe the identification, testing procedures, treatment proposal, and conservation treatment of the boots.
The first section of this paper places the boots within a historical context that assist in dating the boots. Topics include technological improvements, fashionable dress, footwear construction, and comparable examples from museum collections.
The second section of the paper discusses the conservation treatment of the boots. The boots were in poor condition. The red silk was fragile and disintegrating, and the internal structure was poorly supported and at risk for further damage. Testing was necessary to determine the best formulas for custom dyeing with Lanaset dyes and adhesive treatment with Lascaux. The treatment proposal also includes a custom-built mount and box to support the boots structurally. Each aspect of the treatment is described in detail along with photographic documentation of the treatment process. An assessment of the treatment and discussion of future concerns concludes the paper.
