Abstract
With demand for multimedia experiences ever increasing, exhibitions must learn how to balance the use of technologies while integrating a path of interactions to engage visitors' capability of taking in information. This is done while challenging visitors to work and interact with the subject in many ways.
The research in the thesis section of this paper details using psychological models, such as Cognitive Load Theory, as a means to design the flow and delivery of information in the exhibition setting. Evaluating these findings, I came to the conclusion that using interactives will have visitors engage with information causing them to challenge stored memories and reevaluate their values based on the addition of new information. This will in turn have visitors more likely to take the newly stored information and take actions in their life outside of the exhibit.
This design philosophy was brought to fruition in my exhibition project Give & Take. The subject was conservation through the lens of the natural and urban landscape. Integration of interactives and multimedia where used to deliver the subject matter to the audience with the greatest chance of adapting their personal values. The exhibit end in takeaways that have the visitors take the first steps of action outside of the exhibit.
The topic was a chosen as a challenge to my thesis application. This proved to make the thesis research more valuable and produce clear results. Feedback from many professionals in the design world supported the methods and results upon my presentation of the project. Valuable constructive criticism and advisement of expansion of the project will push these ideas into the future applications.
