- Abstract
- This document is arranged in two sections. Part I explores research on Generation Z seeking forms of well-being, and the theory of the social media platform, TikTok, enabling individuals to safely find wellness practices that work for them. Through research, case studies, prototyping, and interviews, I focused on the aspect of community-driven wellness, which derives from the study of Tiktok's unique algorithm forming micro-communities across the world. In promoting human connection, social media platforms possess a connective power that transcends physical space; nevertheless, it is imperative that humanity continues to maintain a connection in the physical world in order to feel a sense of community and belonging. As intimidating as it is, every individual can find wellness within themselves and can find their personal community, the wellness journey begins.
- Part II describes the strategies explored through my thesis within a conceptually applied project to the 3D design of an innovative experience. With the goal of harnessing community-driven wellness experiences, the interpretive design focuses on using the concept of community as a modality to amplify the positive psychological aspects of the whole-person approach to wellness. The approach to these community-driven experiences are algorithm-based and aim to serve digital micro-communities in the physical realm. This can occur via fostering empowerment through the eight dimensions of wellness: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial, allowing people to feel safe in the exploration of mindfulness practices. The concept of community in this project's experiential design describes an emotion or feeling of belonging and not being alone, not necessarily always working and being together. The intent is to promote the individual's sense of belonging when they are a part of an active community, which may motivate them to open their minds and warm up to overwhelming topics (such as the whole-person approach to wellness). It allows them to share personal connectedness while also supporting the ongoing growth of each other, themselves, and the environment.
- Additional target audience research, as well as the selection of a proposed subject, venue, and client, allow for a deeper analysis of the thesis and illustrate the utilization of developed exhibition features. With the overarching goal of implementing community into design strategies, while having an intrapersonal experience, individuals can learn about the eight dimensions of wellness and how they define it, then with the power of choice can apply what they desire to take out of the experience, and end it with an interpersonal connection via developed community through their experiences.
