Summary/Artist's Statement
Artist's Statement:
Throughout the years of studying in fashion at FIT, I have been constantly seeking for the best way to express my ideas as a woman who came alone to New York from Korea, who goes through an endless cycle of joy, loneliness, failures, excitements and barriers on a daily basis. Although I believe that there are countless opportunities and possibilities ahead of me, I could not overlook the bitter-sweet process of getting to the destination of my own journey as a designer. Instead of avoiding the pains and looking for shortcuts, I wanted to fully embrace and celebrate the “journey” that I am going through and express such appreciation through my designs. As a person who started fashion from a self-set goal of making people seen and heard regardless of who they are, I once again wanted to understand and appreciate the beauty of one’s stories that have been, is being and will be made throughout their own journey. For my thesis looks, I wanted to start from my personal take on the inspiration being Boy Scout’s uniform and their adventurous spirits, and somehow manage to make it speak for many others by letting them relate to my own way of celebrating their journeys.
About this Work:
Journey; Explorer's coat, overalls and shirt: The convertible coat contains boy scouts’ uniform inspired details like shape of a scarf tie as a part of the extension of a detachable hood, detachable fold over pockets, tent opening inspired back vent zipper. Arm hole slit embedded in the side zippable gusset, draw string embedded in the bottom hem to hold the shape when converted as a second version of the look. The hand waxed ripstop is coated with 3 layers of otter wax, which makes it water repellent and much more durable in different occasions. The overalls include utilitarian details like fanny pack inspired pouch pocket, zippable knee pockets and functional loops and straps at hem. The button up shirt has an easy-going fit with ease at the back created by pleats.
Journey: Navigator's Bolero, Shirt and Pants: The brown denim-plaid nylon reversible bolero includes an oversized hood with buttons and pocket details at the back. The low crotched balloon pants include size adjustable waist with straps and buttons, unified side pockets that are part of the waist extension, and pouch-like knee pockets. The button up shirt has an extension at the front placket that is shaped like a chest pocket from the boy scout's uniform.
