Summary/Artist's Statement
Artist's Statement:
This collection is about reclaiming the word “siren,” ridding it of its negative connotations and giving power back to the woman. Sirens have often been depicted as monstrous creatures, ripped of their autonomy and reduced to their sex. To me, a siren is a woman who embraces her sexuality and femininity while still owning her power and strength.
About this Work:
Siren Song: Bustier with Panniers - This bustier is constructed with a double layer of fabric: liquid look satin organza layered on top of a fine corset mesh for added structure. To maintain the structure, the bustier is completely boned with spiral steel boning. I created invisible boning casings using the seam allowances and bias tape to create a clean finish on both sides, while making it nearly impossible to see the casing, further adding to the liquid-like feel of the garment. There are also attached panniers, made with the same combination of satin organza and cotton mesh as well as rigilene boning to create and maintain the lightweight structure required of the shape. This look is closed in the front with a busk as well as hook and eyes and in the back has 70 grommets to create the lace up. As a finishing touch, I used various types of clear glass beads to catch the light and mimic water droplets cascading down the panniers.
Siren Song: Glamour Pajama Set - This look was created using various techniques. The stretch panels of the bra and panty as well as the closures were hand-dyed to match the foiled lace. The waist cincher was created by layering the coated chiffon underneath the foiled lace, which was than appliqued down and the excess was cut away to maintain the scallop shape. This waist cincher is boned at the side seams and center back and is closed with hooks and eyes. A variety of glass and pearl beads were hand strung and draped to add whimsy and beauty. The palazzo pants have a hook and eye side closure and a hand stitched invisible waistband. The lace on the hem is hand appliqued, as is the rest of the organically placed lace appliques.
