Abstract
Characters created by illustrators have always been a significant component in the field of animation. The plot or story is the words, the theme is the concept, and the characters are the visuals. All are equally important.
There is a theme, then the plot is filled in, and the characters will be designed last to help tell the story. In this early development and planning stage, the theme and plot define the characters.
As the process progresses, the characters become complete and essential to the final animation. How the three elements, theme, plot, and characters interact with each other changes during the later process. The characters will have an influence on the theme and plot. Character design can alter the plot and theme.
The three elements interact with each other in the whole process, and the characters as designed by illustrators become more memorable in the final animation. This paper will prove why illustrators are equally as important as writers in character development.
