Abstract
The qualifying paper will examine Vanity, a 1980’s (1981-1989) avant-garde Italian fashion magazine, one of the publications that revived fashion illustration. The collaboration of Director Anna Piaggi and the illustrator Antonio Lopez at Vanity during the eighties inspired many in the industry and broke conventions. For example, Vanity used fashion illustration on its covers in a timely fashion illustration that was declared dead, and photography dominated editorial and advertisement.
Piaggi and Lopez, along with Alberto Nodoloni, who took over the magazine in 1984, made uncommon use of diverse art styles that were seemingly unrelated to the fashion art genre, moving the aesthetics of fashion publishing into areas such as primitivism, abstraction, fine arts, and graphic novels.
Vanity broke away from the fashion industry’s commercial aspects, added a new visual language in the technology era’s birth, and made stars out of Lorenzo Mattoti, Francois Berthoud, and Stefano Canulli.
