- In the final 6 weeks of the spring semester, students were asked to work on two separate canvases, each 30" x 40", using a secondary triad palette of violet, green and orange. On one canvas, students worked from direct observation of a live model and had to consider the human form and its visual relationship to the picture frame/rectangle. How does cropping, foreshortening, and the angles of limbs structurally impact the painting? On the second canvas, students were asked to consider the figure in space. While painting the model, students learned to embrace or grapple with the chaos of the studio environment such as perspective, architecture, scale, mark making, shifting light, form description and resolution, all key aspects of the students' visual problem solving.
