Summary/Artist's Statement
From a young age I was surrounded by the bright colors, sounds, and rhythms of my homeland in the Dominican Republic. These cultural experiences have had a profound influence on my artistic vision, and I am constantly inspired by the beauty and richness of my home. I knew I wanted to share my deep roots by creating illustrations that show my heritage. Through my thesis, I aim to explore and celebrate the magic of my cultural roots and the impact they have had on my identity. My inspiration stems from my childhood memories and natural surroundings. I add life to my illustrations by finding an emotional connection. The result of doing so, gives me the opportunity to celebrate my story in my visual narratives where words are not enough to capture the life in my work.
My creativity comes from constantly reminiscing about the rivers, mountains, palm trees, and tropical flowers of my small town called El Rubio. El Rubio is one of the three municipal districts that is part of San José de las Matas, also known as Sajoma. El Rubio is a town where I experienced vibrant childhood memories surrounded by family, captivating scenery, and an abundance of mangoes.
Mis Raíces: Siente la magia is a series of illustrations drawn from my memories of the Dominican Republic that are focused on El Rubio. I decided to use ink and watercolor as I appreciate the fine detailed lines I am able to capture with my pen. I collected images that range from the late 1800s to present day that capture the highlights of my family members and natural landscapes. As I began this project, I was very enthusiastic to give homage to my history and did not realize that this would become an emotional discovery.
I created Mis Raíces: Siente la magia by combining aspects from reference photos to relive emotions from memories of back home. This series showcases moments in time that capture nostalgia and family in a distant time but not a distant place. Treasured moments that have traveled across the Atlantic only to demonstrate that the heart can belong to a place called home. I hope through my collection of illustrations you can connect with my family’s story. My art is a celebration of the diversity, resilience, and the beauty of the Dominican people. My goal is to inspire others to connect with their own cultural roots and embrace the magic of their heritage.
