Summary/Artist's Statement
Growing up in a serious household, I was very well-behaved. Although my parents had high expectations and strict control over me, making my life very smooth, I had many ideas that I could only digest on my own, and my heart always yearned for a carefree, easy life with no demands. So, I have always enjoyed using simple and non-realistic imagery to make people happy. Themes of my work have never been serious or profound, and most of my characters are little monsters. Drawing provided me with freedom of expression. Even when I was busy with work, I still drew. I like to use bright colors and different media to express the themes behind my work in a lighthearted and humorous way, regardless of whether they are profound or not.
It is easy to feel pessimistic in today's environment of intense competition and economic difficulties. People wish they could live on another planet free from worries. This inspired my thesis project——"No Worries Planet,” which tells a story of a group of little monsters living on a polluted planet. Their job is to clear the dark clouds every day until they finally succeed and enjoy the sunshine on the beach. During my study at FIT, I found myself interested in clay and animation. I tried to combine these two elements together. This story is presented in six different scenes, each depicting a different monster's unique way of clearing the clouds. I spent a lot of time learning modeling software and animation logic. Using six short stop-motion style animation clips, 3D printing models and interaction design, the project aims to bring optimism and happiness to viewers by showing how the little monsters never lose hope and always remain optimistic in the face of adversity.
Before switching to an art major, I had a bachelor's degree in accounting and a master's degree in finance. The business world is a very practical and competitive industry. The more I interacted with different people, the more I deeply understood that we will eventually be polished off by the harsh realities of society and having a childlike simplicity within ourselves would be so precious. Therefore, I hope my work can bring warmth and strength to everyone. Slow down, life can be simple, keep going.
