The title of my collection is Apocalypse Dreams, named after my favorite Tame Impala song that I had the privilege of seeing performed live. Tame Impala is an artist known for producing innovative sounds that evoke psychedelic emotions. Their live performances display an intense combination of sounds and visuals, a transformative experience that I strived to communicate in this collection.

Impressionism is a movement in which artists emphasized the naturalistic rendering of light and color to convey the feel of a scene while using visibly thin and softer brush strokes; with landscapes being the subject of most paintings. Water Lilies is a series, whom Claude Monet, a French Impressionist, dedicated the last 30 years of his life to. The series is depicted of Monet’s garden in Giverny in which he was challenged to capture the altering appearance of reflection, light, and color at every moment. Monet’s technique consisted of loose and fluid brush strokes, causing the colors to blend optically; creating the illusion of movement. He used color to capture the essence of his subject, rather than the actual colors of the objects depicted. In this series, he focused mainly on cool tones like blues, and greens to give off a soothing and relaxing mood, as he felt when he was in his garden.

The work of FIT students and faculty took center stage in the Gallery FIT exhibition Crafting Change. Organized by the Textile/Surface Design Department in conjunction with New York Textile Month, the works featured in Crafting Change used long-established techniques in a modern context to explore the shifting boundaries between art, design, and technology. Combining hand-crafting techniques with digital processes preserves tradition while pushing textiles into the future. Projects bridging science and textiles have the potential to revolutionize the fashion and textile industries, leading us to a more sustainable world. These works were promising examples of how FIT is successfully encouraging interdisciplinary mergers of craft, technology, and sustainability in order to usher textile arts into the 21st century.
